A Brief History of Post Falls

Post Falls takes its name from Frederick Post, a German millwright who arrived in the Pacific Northwest in the 1870s with a vision for a lumber mill. In 1870, Frederick purchased the land for $500 from Chief Andrew Seltice, the leader of the Coeur d’Alene Tribe, and established the town of Post Falls in 1871. Before European settlement, the land along the Spokane River had been home to the Schitsu’umsh people, known today as the Coeur d’Alene Tribe, for thousands of years.

The written agreement between Frederick Post and Chief Seltice, known as Treaty Rock, is still visible today in Falls Park, making it one of the most meaningful historical landmarks in the entire region. The site connects visitors to a pivotal moment in North Idaho’s story and stands as a reminder of the respectful relationship that shaped this community.

Post Falls was initially recognized for its water-powered sawmill, which played a significant role in the region’s economy, and the town grew steadily around the power of the Spokane River. By the 20th century, the area evolved from a logging hub into a diverse residential and commercial center. Buck Knives, one of the most recognized names in the knife industry, has made the area its corporate home, reflecting the blend of heritage craftsmanship and modern industry that defines Post Falls today.
